This topic comes up a bunch. I think I'm going to pin it.

I highly recommend you read the article Dungeons and Dragons for the complete n00b. It's got hints and tips on how to gather a gaming group and what you'll need and need to know before beginning play.

Bebefau -

It's really sort of necessary for one person in your group to own a PHB. Now, it doesn't need to be you. Sharing a PHB between several players is a great way to stretch the cost. $29.95/4 people is about $7.50/person.

The reason why a PHB is necessary for new players is that it is the only book that explains how the game works. There are other reference guides such as the online SRD, which is free, but those don't have descriptive texts about character creation (the actual character creation process is copyrighted to WotC).

If your whole group is new to the game and you're all short on cash, you can always start with second edition AD&D. This version of the game is very similar to the current one, and you should be able to find used copies of the core books (PHB, DMG, MM) very cheaply at your local game store or an online auction.

oh, and I should note that most religions' winter holidays are coming up. A PHB would make a great present to ask for, or something you could buy with any money you receive. :)

pluss if you own one you can impress all your friends by using cool terms like PHB and DMG....l33t!

seriously though Players Handbook is absolutely necesasry and for new players DM Guide and Monster manual are also key...once you get experienced witht he game you can do without DMG and MM but the PHB is always a must

I agree, you really need the PHB to know what you're doing, but until you can get one there's a SRD version of the 3.5 PHB here:
