The DnD we talk about here is more the pen-and-paper version played with friends around the dining room table, and not a video game. There are some CRPGs that use the DnD Ruleset, but none would be free or cheap that use the current D20 rules.

You might be able to find some of the old games for download that are based on 1st edition DnD. This is a recent article that gives the history of computer games for D&D, its' a good place to start to find out what might be out there, then you can do a google search to see if any of them are available somewhere for download.

whoops, Part one of the above article might be more helpful. I remember playing Pool of Radiance, it was a cool game.

Here it is.

Baldurs gate 1&2 - EXCELENT game, uses D&D 2nd edition rules
Neverwinter Nights - Good game, uses D&D 3rd edition rules
The most worthless line of any RPG book EVER:
"Though these two kinds of devils wield terrible powers, they have different characteristics and appearances."

If you don't mind reading a little bit you could look into MUDs. I belive there are several 3rd Ed MuDs running. If you don't know a MUD is a Multi User Domain. They are text based online RPGs. You might at least look one up. who knows you might like it.

There's a few D&D muds out there.. but none that really follow the rules, to my knowledge. And I have yet to see more than one or two Forgotten Realms muds.

Like those above said, there are no free legal downloads..

There are sites that play DND via Play-by-post though.. like www.dndonlinegames.com

Or you can see if the old Dos based DND games are available in some old shop somewhere...

Vegeto's Bones

Watch this game. An online game with heroic character can-do. Everyone’s seen them in films…others have read about them in novels. This never-before witnessed level of software ingenuity brings all your favorites, and more, to life! It’s a fully developed dice program with unprecedented graphic quality and the most powerful die expression parser I’ve ever encountered. Just imagine…Herr E. Long the Sturdy wields a magical longsword that delivers a limb severing (1d4 + 2)d12 + (1d4 + 2)8 points of damage(representing his spinning toss attack). ONLY VEGETO’S BONES easily makes Herr E. Long spring to life without interfering with your role play!

P.S. Use the custom die to mimic your favorite die from flyingbuffalo!

For CRPG I recommend "Temple of the Elemental Evil" this game use 3.5e and is closest to Pen and Paper game than others DnD games. You can do 5-foot step, trip, charge, flank etc. You can find some cheap one in eBay.

Ah yes, ToEE. Broken on delivery, good with the patch, and dirt cheap now that Troika has kicked the darn bucket (we'll miss you Troika).

Some people are like Slinkies. They're really good for nothing. But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Dell: We're pleased to inform you that your order was shipped on 06/06/2006!
Me: Great, so now I have Satan in my computer. Like XP wasn't problematic enough.

I just re-installed Baldur's Gate last week. Any of you guys remember the old SSI TSR games- Pools of Radience, Azure Bonds, couple of Krynn games and I think even a Dark Sun game?
