I use Redblade, but I'm curious as to other's opinions.

PC Gen have to be the best. What I look for in character generators besides the calculation part is their charactesheets, and the pc gen have the best one. I don't like redblade, especially the 3.5e version because of their crappy cs .

I went with other. The best character generator is the human mind. No computer software can compare well with the old way of doing things. They don't allow you to really think about your character, which is by far the most imporant aspect of character generation.

I very much disagree with that. You can do whatever you want with a character generator (at least with red blade, pc gen and e-tool) that you can with a human mind (as long as they involve a legal D&D character), but with a character generator you have a less chance of making mistakes.

I haven't yet encountered a character generator that decides anything for you. Character generator was never meant to be a substitute for the human mind. I also don't see how a character generator can prevent you from thinking about a character in any way.

I also went with other and agree with Rintarin's choice... maybe not his explaination, but I do know that my preferred method of character generation is to just roll it up myself and work it out on paper. One, I've been playing long enough that when I started there wasn't any sort of character generator so it's what I'm comfortable with.

Two, I feel that it helps me better understand how a character works and the rules & mechanics of the system; while a generator will do all the math and fill in all the locations it probably doesn't explain how it arrived at his numbers. Having built a character myself, I know where each value comes from and what went into it.

And three, since I've been doing it long enough, I can usually put a character together pretty quickly, so it's not like a generator saves me that much time, if that's a concern. I can have a functional character together in 10 minutes or so... fleshing it out takes longer, but if speed is an issue, you're not going to have a fully developed character no matter what method you use.

I don't believe that any tool automatically hinders one's roleplaying/character development. A character generator just makes this process easier.

I agree that Redblade's character sheet isn't great; however PCGen seems to run really slowly on my computer. Anyone know why?

Depends which version youve got 5.51 and earlier ran slowly but 5.60 and up are running faster 5.71 is the fastest and Ive got no delays with screen etc anymore.I think it was because of the code and as it gotten furter along and more work's been done , its become more streamlined and efficient.

Thank you very much, Darius. I'll try PCGen again.

By the way- how do I get it to use Edition 3.5?

In the menubar, go to Setting-Game Mode & Campaign and select 3.5e.

My version was 5.71 but it was still slow till I updated java runtime environment, so if updating the pc gen doesn't do the trick, try updating java runtime.

Does anyone have any links i can get to possibly use these programs.

I havent been playing D&D for that long but i know a decent amount. I think personally for me, that sometimes the generators can be a hassel, i can think up a character pretty quickly and get good results from that creation. I agree with them with the way of doing it by the train of thought. But i cant knock the other side without trying it...........so if anyone has any links for me that would be great. Thanks alot.
