My favorite character that I've played is probably Kerri Fairstrider, a Halfling priest of Zilchus and wizard. I'm sure it was due entirely to the DM and the campaign, but he was just a fun little guy to play.
We started at, hmm, probably 4th or 5th level in the world of Greyhawk... Kerri, being the priest of Zilchus, was a river merchant with a small trading vessel, and started gameplay in search of some rice, because he had just turned over a few bags for a pretty penny. We made obscene amounts of money and spent it as quickly and freely as we got it (usually on things like wine and entertainment). We had a goofy party dynamic, some interesting politics and lots of non-hack-n-slash gameplay. There was just an enormous amount of detail (which is obvious by looking at the character sheet linked above, crazy things like the vintage of the bottle of wine I just bought), but somehow the DM was able to offer us that sort of detail without getting bogged down in it... and he was a master of improvisation. Anyway, if anyone's interested, there's a nearly complete journal linked with that character sheet.
Unfortunately, the campaign ended when the DM graduated and we all migrated our separate ways, sheesh, about 8 years ago? *sigh*
*raises a glass to Johnny* I hope the theater is still treating you well, man!

One of my favorite characters I've had much fun playing from 1st level to 17th before he died was Orath, 1st edit assassin of CN alignment. He's somewhat of a crazed madman, adventurer, and a slayer of whom he considers to be 'dregs of society' undeserving of life...although this can be construed as anyone he see's will turn a sizeable profit. He's pretty invaluable in the group he was in serving as its advanced scout he would stealthilly scout out the route for his party, eliminate any sentries, and ensure the way was secure before signaling for his band to move in. He was also looked to and responsible for staging successful ambushes and traps for enemies. With his disguise ability and talent for acting he could mimic just about anyone and use these talents to gain the drop on any unsuspecting target.

Plangye, Helga Denchdottr. sounds awesome
My two favorites were Stonebear and Merle
Stonebear [forget his first name] was a lawful nuetral ranged barbarian. I had special dispensation toboth be lawful, and have javalins count as shortspears in melee. THe campaign was native-maerican-esqe, with foriegners settling not too far, but the problem was the rise of acient shadow demons our and other tribes watched over. Not only was hitting a guy twice as he flew over to me, then then surpising him by criticaling in melee awesome, but I was total conservative char, irrationally hating these outsiders but adhereing to lour tribal laws,
Merle [forget her last name] was a mid-high level ranger rogue. She was a bounty hunter, and did ridiculous amounts of damage with crits, twf, AoO's, etc. The campaign was evil, but she was true neutral [yes, she helped start a war, but she also fought her allies to keep some innocents out of it..just she doesn't consider most people innnocent]. My friend made a broken alrge monk who was a lofelong friend [man, was HE evil] and we amde our characters as broken as possible becasue we ahd a third powergamer friend whom we wanted to teach a lesson to. Her swords were Din, justice, and Rahamim, Mercy. Possibly my favorite moment was when one of the first Gm's tried to railroad us by having voices in my head and doing subdual damage to me if I went he wrong direction. I just went along with it and defiently kept going the wrong way
other character so note are: the orc ranger who complained that elves stole bowmanship from the orcs, the TRUELY pacifist yuan-ti spellcaster back in 2nd [even a hold spell was an aggressive act...], Sir Hempstead, an extremly fat knight from the merchant class in grim n gritty who used a disarming cloak and rapier [he was one brave fat man... [inserted edit] - Ia ctually based this char off of a real fat fencer I saw at a ren-fair], and a Wolf with extremly high inttelect for a wolf [yes, he had no way to speak to the rest of the party or use tools...advanced in fighter, I beleive]
yes, I love unusal characters, with flaws...and all my characters parents are alive [though not always happy with them] because I REFUSE to fall into the trite trap of being an orphan

Gohar Shieldshot
Human Wizard/Fighter, specializing in protection and hindering spells, as well as archery. When facing down two angry stone giants with two buddies, the combination of Mass Mage Armor and Unluck kept us alive for quite a while.
He's a total show-off that likes to prove just how great he thinks he is. He can usually prove his worth with magic, and he is a decent shot with his longbow, but he can get annoying at times.
He was good times. For another favorite, look at my sig. It's hard to play an exalted character amongst those who are drifting towards evil...
*sigh* Some of my favorite characters I built as NPCs for my campaign (which I doubt I will ever finish). If the Character Challenge was still going, I'd post a few. Too bad, I guess.

My favorite one was my first. Shimshon the dwarven monk. The best memory I have from him was when the DM through 4 spawn of kiuss who were immune to nonmagical weapons when we where 3 characters of level 5 with no magical weapons execpt for a dagger +1 our rogue had (our total gear value of all 3 of us was about was about 3000 gp) and we won, how? we were a druid, monk and rogue and the druid cast magic fang on shimshon and we had very good luck (none of them hit us even once). He was the character who made the most trouble to the DM (amazingly even without casting a single divination). He was always calm except for when orcs came, unlike most dwarves he hated alcohol.
I wish only only happiness, good luck and health to all of you.

Nothing says that it has stopped. We just got sort of busy and forgot to keep posting there. Same with the Monster Challenge.
This technique of RPG playing has been passed down the Bloodmooon line for generations!
