Recently, I actually read up on it in the PHB.
The hardness acts as damge reduction (if I understand it correctly).
I didn't relize the answer was there all along. All I had to do was read further in the PHB. I was originally looking in the DMG.
Now I feel kinda silly.

My experence is , most players dont want do things like look up hardness etc , they just want to know wether their attack hit , their attempt at kicking\chopping the door down worked or wether throwing a cat at the door to find magical traps worked (personal exprience
Thats why there was such a size difference between the PHB and DMG in ADnD , players got what they need to know and the DM got the rest.
As I said , this is my opinion and people will disagree

The information on a certain type of doors hardness or hp doesn't really belong in the PHB.

You have my sympathies...I used to play AD&D when I was 7, at a daycare. I was the one they picked on so people did stuff like that to me all the time. That's cool though, because I used to drop fireballs on the group every so often because I didn't pay attention.

The bad thing is that if that information is in the PHB then why not make one big book with all the stuff in. I think that unless a person has that information memorized from the DMG a PC should not know the mechanics and other things. I think it is a spoiler for most people if they know it when they are one of the characters encountering it.
