Page 60-62 of the DMG has the descriptions and a chart for the hardness and hp of various types of doors. Even a brief description of 'breaking down doors.' But not chopping through them. It says to use the hrdness and hp for chopping

What I'd like to know is...What do you use for a dc (or ac) for hacking through before hit points are deducted? If its the hardness, it would be much easier than knocking them down, but the book says it's easier to break its lock or hinges.

I never had a case where players hacked through a door before, but if that happens I would use the hardness depending on material and thickness but instead of one roll the character will have to make multiple rolls (since it will definitely take more time)

Also if the door is metal enforced, there will be chance that the weapon will bent or break or become dull.

I think because of the time factor the dmg mentions that breaking them down would be more easier.

The AC is under the "striking inanimate objects"

You predetermine what the door is made of, that chart determines the hardness.

You predetermine how thick the door is, and go by the material per inch of thickness chart for determining hit points.

Did they try turning the door knob? I actually find that to be the easiest way actually. ;)

I don't know how many times I've had an overly paranoid rogue player end up locking a door just because they never think to check to see if a door is unlocked first :P

Also, there are some weapons that just should not be able to knock down a door. I mean, have you ever heard of someone using a rapier to knock down or smash open a door? (Anime and certain movies do not count)

They do mention that in the PHB. It states that certain actions should be ineffective, such as shooting arrows at a wooden door to break it down.
Of course there are always those "special arrows"

Yeah i think the actual breaking down of doors is really up to the dm. It seems like it is rarely too important as long as they have a means of breaking it down. Generally it will take a while and they will make a whole bunch of noise, but eventually get through. So as long as they have a means of breaking through then basically assume anything on the other side has time to prepare defenses or maybe if they are trying to be stealthy the mission is failed. it seems rather rare that i have come across people that have to bash through a door in hurry but then you might want to refer to the more helpful people posting. :D

I agree.

In all the years I've been playing, the need to brake down a door has only popped up a couple times.

Hmmm...

I'm actually kinda suprised by that.

Well... Usually the rogue is there to be able to just pick the lock so breaking down the door is unnecessary.

Well it's mostly based on your gaming style and/or character.

You might risk have possible enemies readied for combat by breaking a door down with great noise if you are a muscle-brained barbarian.

If you dont have a rouge in the party , then chopping/kicking the door in is the only option

My point was that the kicking down is not the only option.
