Ok,, I have a creature that a person in my party is trying to attack. The creature has an AC of 24 (that is with all bonuses added and stuff). It has been so long since I played that I forgot how to calculate what my player needs to roll to hit the mob. Rolling a 20 sided, I know he can't roll a 24... ;) Can someone please help me figure this out? I think I have been away too long! (lol)

Wow... just how long have you been away from the game?

Well... if he rolls a natural 20 then its a automatic hit. Then he would roll for the critical as follows.

He rolls and say he gets a 17. Lets assume the character has a Str of 14 giving him a +2 modifier. Add that to the 17 to get 19. Now we look at the Base Attack Bonus, which is different for each class. Say the player is a character at 4th level giving him a +4 to his BAB. Add this to the 19 and you get 23. Now lets say the character has a +1 magical sword. Add this to the 23 and you get 24. This would hit the creature that has the AC of 24. As long as everything, when added up, is at least equal to the AC of what you are trying to hit you hit.

Also, you must take into consideration whether its melee or ranged combat. Ranged combat uses the Dex mondifier instead of the Str modifier. Feats, such as Weapon Finesse, must also be taken into consideration because it changes the stat used to determind the ability plus.

If this is in any way confusing, then respond and I will try to clarify a bit more.

First of all.... Which edition are you playing? In second edtion things worked differently. If you're playing 3rd...

This (the +4) is only true if the character is a fighter or a ranger or a paladin.

I really recomend that you read your players handbook (PHB). It answers the question and has a chart for determining the BAB (Base Attack Bonus), based on class. As well as explaining the different modifications and other rules of combat. It's all in there.

I am getting closer to understanding,, it has just been a long time and my books seem to have walked off with my old roommate *grumble*.

I found my Werewolf books *sigh* don't think those will help in AD&D.... I guess it is time to go to the bookstore and take some notes.. Can't afford books until payday...

If you are going to play D&D 3E, just download the SRD from Wizards. The combat document goes over the basics of the rules, even if it is missing some of the flavor text. And since it's free, you can read it now while you wait for payday. :)

Also, I would like to point out that there are links to Amozon.com and the Rpg shop in the resources section of this site.

Personaly, I buy rom Amazon when it comes to books (even after comparing prices to RPG shop). Amozon has really good prices, not to mention there super saver shipping.

Well the reason that I used DnD 3E rules for attacking was because I saw that the creature he was fighting had an AC 24. In AD&D 2E, didn't they use the THAC0 system?

To dragonhand777: Doesn't the shipping kinda make them more expensive in the end or is it negligable?

I was just gonna point that out, but well, ok.

I can answer this one. At amazon, any order over $25 is free shipping. So I generally buy 2 books at a time, which means free shipping and generally 10-20% off cover price.

Even if I get one at a discount and one that's not discounted, I still get the free shipping and I'm paying less because I got the one at a discount.

To Hit an Aromor Class of 0 Thaco. Yeah, that word alone brings back memories. Funny thing is, back then the group I played with did 60% role-playing and 40% combat. Sometimes less than that if we could get out of it.

That's what it's called. Belive me, you save!!! I use to buy from a local gaming store, then when someone in our group showed me how much he was spending on the same books buying them from Amozon, well needless to say I buy from Amozon now.

I knew what THAC0 means, personally, but I don't know what it does.

Okay... in D&D prior to 3e, attacks were based off of THAC0. The worst AC you could have was 10 (no armor and no dex bonus). Each class of armor decreased that number... padded brought you to AC 9, leather to AC 8 and so on. AC would eventually get down to 0, then moving into negative numbers. At first level, all characters needed to have a total roll (d20 roll plus modifiers) of 20 to hit AC 0, and as you advanced the total roll you needed to hit AC 0 would get lower (and easier). D&D still functions the same way with it's rolling method (d20 plus modifiers and the rolls get easier) but simplified AC by reversing the way you count it (AC value simply raises and gives you the target number).

It started getting funny when you get AC -14. THAC0 was a good idea and all but why didn't they just do it the way that they do it now in 3E.

To dragonhand777 and ladyofdragons: [WOMBAT]!!! I didn't know that you could get free shipping like that. That rocks.

I think his cursing was out of excitment. I'm pretty sure he didn't mean any thing offensive with it.
