Alright, we all know that extradimensional spaces in extradimensional spaces lead to dimensional collapse in the form of a localized black hole. hence why you don't but a bag of holding into a portable hole. however, what happens if you turn a bag of holding insideout? Here's my theory: assume that the bag was the size of a dice bag, but the inside was the size of a large backpack. if turned inside out, then the interior space would be exterior, thus it would leave you with a bag the size of that large backpack. any other insights?

Well, I think that if you turned a bag of holding inside out you would just have a bag turned insideout. All of the stuff would fall out and the bag of holding would not work right again until the bag was put right again. Well... I cheated... I looked in the Dungeon Master's Guide to find out what the rules say.

My game group and I had a conversation about this. Being the lazy DM mofo that I am, I generally just equip the characters with a Bag of Holding, and it is understood that they have the necessary items (torches, trail rations, etc) in there. But you're right...a bag turned inside out is a bag turned inside out. However, the whole portable hole (no pun intended)/bag of holding trick is interesting. I wonder what would happen if it was the other way? Put a portable hole into a bag of holding? Would you essentially be able to put a world in a bag? That'd be a cool thing to sell...Faerūn in a bag, you guys! Only 50 gp! Call now!

Its got me thinking about a Siege weapon for blowing holes in walls etc , for a high magic campaign - get a large bag of holding and place it in a small frame that holds the bag open , suspend a smaller bag of holding over the open larger one with a light string or cord(something that breaks easily).Place the whole lot in a catapault and fire at what you want to make go away :D

What if your characters had a bag of holding on them and then cast rope trick and went inside?

well techinically, you could only fit if the bag was wide enough, and if it was, then i would venture to guess that you could play around in an extradimensional space and suffocate due to a lack of air.

Had a friend who had a large portable hole and lots of money , He had a carpenter made a large round room , with all the comforts of home but no door, instead there was a hatch in the roof(can we see where this is going :D ) , got a mage to create an item that refreshed the air and kept it breathable , had the room lowered into the hole , folded it up and carried it around in his backpack.
When he needed to , he would put the hole down somewhere , climb down the ladder and close the hatch ,after he'd rested or whatever , he'd climb up the ladder open the hatch and come out , just like Bug's Bunny with his rabbit hole

Kinda reminds me of the symbiotic relationship between a certain dwarf and gnome i know. the dwarf carries a large barrel on his back where inside hides his *gnomish familiar* who points his little finger out of a peep hole to cast fireball.

Isn't there already a magic item that does that? Like a little tent thing that when you say the magic word will become a big tent that has Mordenkeiden's Magnificent Mansion set up in it. Also, if there isn't that, there is a rod that you can do this with except you don't leave behind the portable hole.

Of course the entire Bugs Bunny idea is always nice.

Must resist urge...theoretical physics...*drool* LOL

I love this...scientifically analyzing the physics of D&D. Which is funny, really, when you think of it...there's so much different about the D&D world and its mechanics that would really make being a physicist in Faerūn or any other D&D setting a lot of fun...especially in Planescape.

Can you tell I'm a physics nut? lol

Serious, a physics nut? i guess i just didn't notice.

Yeah but the whole idea of magic automatically negate the theories and laws of physics. Magic is a different type of physics in a way. It is a way of describing how things in our universe work and why they happen. You can use magic to explain gravity and other such properties of the real universe. I guess in a way they can't coexist as we know it. The whole idea of physics are constants so if you break those constants then there is nothing to base physics on so it is no longer plausible. there is a lot of theory that you can apply to the magical world but once again that just changes with one spell.

Interesting postulation you have there, Bard.

Personally, I never saw magic as a fundamental force in the physical world; instead, I always looked at magic as a sort of metaphysical study, taking the basis of classical physics, bending their laws, and creating effects that one would normally see as "unreal." Using the universal biokinetic energies of things within the Multiverse to create desired effect, so to speak...
