I just have to say, no matter what level your group is, any good DM can still make them squirm and soil themselves.

Well well looks I I need to add my two cents here. :D

As to what lvl I love the best It would depend on the cracator that I am playing at the time. What lvls Do I dislike the most would be 1-4 over the last 27 years i have started so many campains one shots and new caractors that i have lost count years ago. If you have a well defined concept for you caractor start about givr you just enough to get stupid and do some thing dumb or not.

now As to some of my Hi lvl Caractors they would be Epic by current standards Like my Bard She is old school from the days of the white books first theif then fighter finally bard currently 14th lvl my orginal ranger gimalia retired at 24th no one would DM him any more Most of my Caractors are either 1st addtion or orginal DND.

so this is a shout for epic since most of my old carators that i love would now epic under the new rules Hmm now to find some one willing to play them HMMM any takers????

That is So true.

with a good DM it does not matter what the players are they can give them a run for there money.

I can remember a group of 14th lvls that were almost driven Insane by a tribe of Kobolds with hit and run, sniping tacts. Our mages did not have the correct spells for small scale ops and their tactics did not give us time to rest. the fighter were big and str and could not fit into the tunnels. the thief neaely got killed trying hold peron from their shaman the mas arrows.
Even when we tried to ignore them they joined in on the other side. we finally found their lair and finshed them off but out of 6 players and 3 major NPC's only the 2 fighters were alive and we spent most of out gold getting the others back. The mage and one of the fighters developed a phobia about Kobolds after that.

That is why I am not afriad of any thing my players find or want to come up with. if they don't know what to do with it it will get them killed if they do great role playing B)

Once the Charactor is established (lvl 6-10) then proper role playing can begin.

Ture, starting is much more fun, but accualy being able to play an entire dungeon in less than 5 sessions is a very good thing.

In our Greyhawk campaign, we were roughly 10th level and loaded on magic. we were cleaning out the orcs nicely along one of the coasts when we happened to stumble upon Cantona, which was a city with a rather large anti-magic shell around it. boy was that a tough encounter. fortunately, my dwarf's magical axe was also made of adamantite which made things a little easier, but still, a group so dependant on magic being temporarily deprieved of it. actually thinking and role playing was involved.

I don't know guys... I know a couple pretty beefy mages. Here is a story to illustrate:

We are in a pretty big battle and there were a few pretty powerful ogres that we had to kill. So everyone who could melee was in melee combat and the mage was quickly running out of spells. After some time, we were able to kill all of the ogres but one and were pretty beat up. It was the mage's turn and if he was not able to kill it then the ogre's initiative would come up next. If the ogre got the action then there is a pretty good chance that the person currently facing him would die. Because the mage didn't have any effective spells prepared for the day, he decides to throw his +2 greatsword at the ogre. Makes the roll and gets a 20. Then he confirms the crit by rolling VERY high once again. Needless to say the ogre was cut in half.

Yea... shouldn't call mages cowards. There are always those few that can get pretty lucky and do stuff like this. On a side note, the mage was able to do this again later on in the campaign.
We are the scourge of the underdark...
We are the saviours to our kind...
We are the devout...
We are the enlightened...
We are the true rulers by right...

We are Drow...
Beware us...

He be a fightin' mage with a greatsword o doom!!
lucky yes, beefy, eh *shrug*
with spells like Tenser's transformation and Iron Body, on the other hand, mages can be beefy whenever they want. but then again, shall you prefer the damage of a 1d12 + 10 from a beefy rager with a greataxe or a 15d6 damage from a mage's fireball? as always, fighter's are better at lower levels, but are whooped by a mage at higher levels. Imprisonment anyone? like Powerword Kill, there's no save. didn't exactly kill you, but did the next best thing.

My favorite's probably mid-level, 6-10. low level is great if you're a fighter, but if you're a mage it just sucks [CHAIR]. Nothing more boring than playing a first level mage. Every time I do it I end up saying "oh yeah, I forgot how much this sucks!". Mid level you've got some beef behind you, and you can do some damage but nothing is necessarily a breeze.

Not sure where you'd put them up, but convert them first.

I think there is a little bit of magic in building up a character from first level especially if you are a mage-like character. (pun intended) but once you've done it once it's kind of like losing your virginity. you can never go back to the extremely low levels. While finding the low levels challenging and exciting there really is not enough class diversity. I prefer lower level campaigns somewhere between 3-7. When you have a couple levels under your belt you can start with a little idea of where you want to go. when level one it doesn't really matter what you want to do with your character because you can't do anything anyway. one thing that has never really grasped me is epic games because you are TOO powerful. Like you have grown too far apart. Fighters have this ungodly amount of hitpoints... not literally but way more then mages, but mages can teleport and stuff. (I know they teleport is a 5th level spell but the point is that they are very seperated) High levels allow almost too much mobility, and where people might say this offers more role-playing chances I think it inhibits them. Because now you have so many options you are focusing what your character is doing not why. I have noticed that often players lose focus when a mage can level an army, or a fighter can single handedly take out a tarrasque. I find they become too apathetic and get too focused on completing the quest on not on why they are on it. Like why would their specific personality take on the quest? I don't ask that you agree with me but acknowledge that I am right.

I found that with a Caster a high Con helps alot at higher levels.
+4 HPs x 15 levels = 60 extra hit points
With some prep time to cast Mage Armor, Shield, Fly, Mirror Image, and Fire Shield they can rock most melee's worlds.
As I did in a scenario involving a grappler style monk. B)
