I have been pondering for the longest time... and I have finally come across this one question... This one question leaves me without the ability to figure out my magic system... any and all helpful ideas would be nice... and uh... Helpful.

I went with 1 "mp" beign enough magical energy to fuel a 1st level spell, with cantrips being treated specially. YOu can cast as many cantrips as you have spelclasting levels for free each day, with each additional one costing 1 "mp". That's my system and it's working pretty well so far. The test group (read: "Random people that play a standardized party") has just achieved 2nd level, so we'll see how it holds up here.
This technique of RPG playing has been passed down the Bloodmooon line for generations!

Psionics is the Best (capital B*) balanced point-based magic system there is. 1 PP equals 1 manifestation of a 1st level power.

Once again, going to agree wholeheartedly with Red - for d20 system rules, you really can't beat the 3.5 psionics system for a basis in a point casting system. In part because:

1- It's easy to make the transition, since cost is a function of spell level (2*SL-1).
2- It's easy to make the transition for metamagic feats, since costs are linear (+2 MP per +1 SL adjustment).
3- It's already balanced for casting level caps (ie, you can't spend more MP than your caster level on any one spell).
4- It's not any worse for caster level functions (ie, that 10d6 1st level orb spell is going to be just as hinky for MP/Vancian system).

As for dealing with cantrips... why even bother with keeping cantrips as 0-level spells in an MP system? Frankly, I'd just bump them into 1st level spells or say that you have a 50% chance of casting the cantrip for free (not spending that whole 1 MP thing... hoopty [WOMBAT] do after fifth or sixth level). Cantrips are kinda retarded as written, because only full casters have access to the utter crap spells (seriously... bards, rangers, paladins, hell even spellthieves all start their casting progression with 1st level spells). The smartest wizard in the multiverse can cast the same number of cantrips as an half-brain-dead apprentice. What is the point of these things? I can't understand the reasoning... it makes me crazy!

I suppose I could always up the functions a little to like 4*SL-2 and still allow for cantrips to total 1 MP... That seems workable enough... I just wanted to revise a system for writting spells... not just casting them... Especially spells that deal straight damage (postive or negative to stats or HP). I'm trying to develop that MASTER SYSTEM... *Shrugs* It's almost done, save for Psionics and Magic (although I am getting closer...)
