But back on topic...

I personally prefer DMing, as I think I have a tendancy to try and get people to look at my creations... hmm... probably not a good thing...

He could but that's really goofy and kinda annoying, because the DM has to run both the campaign and the character, and after a while it'd get old (not to mention cutting into session prep. time and preparations themselves).

I've been getting pretty involoved as a DM in recent years. I thnk part of me prefers playing over DMing, but I like being able to build a world and run a strong story when I have a group with the right kind of chemistry. It's that whole "right kind of chemistry" thing that tends to get in the way, though. :P

Player... OMG Player... If anyone has ever fought their players for sleep for nine days bc it was summer and they wanted to play I think that they would agree with me... OMG... Man last two summers ago was awful... sleep 2-4 hrs a night/morning/afternoon/evening or whenever I got to go to sleep, have a head cold, drink hot chocolate and eat ramen for nine days straight... and still DM for nine days straight.... OMG I told them that if I had to fight them for sleep I was going to cut the off... Lol... Luckily they haven't done it anymore... I guess they finally realized how fragile their DM is... then again I am just a level 1 bard... lol...

It depends on the kind of game I'm playing/DMing.

I love playing, that's how I started. The suprises, team work, and the reward of seeing your character become a powerhouse of hacky hacky slashy slashy or abu dahbi-ness. Oh...and the pure joy of getting that magic battle axe...Mmmmmmmmm

Of course, there is also something satisfing about running a good game that has everyone entranced and excited to come back the next week. The way the players eye light up when they first walk into the treasure room only to have their eyes go dull and full of abject terror when they discover that they now have to deal with three trolls armed with bastard swords while standing in a cave filled with methane pockets and somewhere an ogre mage is helping the trolls by neutralizing all acid style attacks. And while retreating might seem like a good idea, a pit trap has opened and is filled with 5 or 6 rust monsters.

Well, I haven't seen the look of abject terror from that yet, but I will. I got that planned for a few weeks from now.

Ah, the good old rust monster.

They're even more fun with templates that let them stick around longer and destroy more metal :)

Why use a standard rust monster when you can design your own, more vicious version? ^_^

I got to say I prefer being a player.. first cuz I'm sort of lazy ;) .. and that even though i really try to put alot of work and colour into my PCs, I just can say it comes to the time Dms spend on preparing sessions.
I just seem to love to have the actor's chair in a campaign, to see how my actions and adventures affects the story and the world controlled by the DM...
The same way, character devellopement, is a great fun.. is how much you put into your character's background, roleplaying as well as his past in-game experiences that trully makes ur PC grows from stats to body... then of course you sorta get attached to your PC : which ends up being all the more fdun for both players and DMs...
But I got to say the DM chair is way harder to fill...

My 2 copper...

I've been playing dnd for nearly 16 years. I've always played a character. However, in my current group, one dm suffered dm burnout, and the other is about to have a baby (well his wifes doing the hard part hehe) and has decided to give up the dm chair. Sooo, I have decided that I would take over as dm.

I've been world biulding and planning adventures, it's a lotta work (not that I ever thought it wasn't). I'm going to do my best to be the dm I'd like to have. This means, that there will be more role-playing than what we've had over the past couple of years as well as a few more 'puzzles.' While I'm really enjoying all my many plans to give the pcs challenges, reasons to go adventuring in the first place (you know, reasons to fight the baddies) and rewards for thier work, I'm not sure how it will compare to just bieng a pc.

The countdown is on. It's only a matter of a few weeks and it'll be me in that chair. I'm anxious. A few years ago, I would've just started looking for a new group (maybe) or just gone without playing for a while rather than take over the DM mantle.

In fact, I've noticed many of the people I've played dnd with over the years were kinda like that (not just me).

So, which do you perfer to be a dm or a player?

Why?

I believe you should go for it dming is an awesome thing to do you have all the power of what happens

Currently I like being a PC more than DMing. I am still too new to the most recent versions of the game to DM comfortably. I am still learning too many of the "new" mechanics. Ive played DND for 25 years but there was a mighty long hiatus in the middle where I missed several entire editions of the game. Its still the same game in many ways but radically different in others. Until I get the new way under my belt I won't feel good about DM ing. Of course, that does not stop me from beginning to generate some ideas about a world and campaign for when I am ready. . .

What funny is that I used to DM my little brother.

He is the one that got me back into the game a couple of years ago - He is a phenomenal DM - a truly gifted DM.

I guess it comes full circle

Has anyone ever tried co -dming with someone very like minded - it wouldn't exactly be less work but it might make for some really fun stories?

I was invited to join a D&D group last spring. All the players in the group were newbies, including myself, but our DM had been playing for probably close to 20 years. It was fun, but there were a lot of scheduling conflicts, and none of us players really felt like we were learning the game. I bought the three core books for 3.5E and started my own campaign (centered around an additional god I created named Holy Deg :D ), and invited 3 of the other players to join (my wife, my best friend, and his wife). They all loved my campaign, and before long the group was up to six players. We've had a lot of fun with the campaign when we've been able to get together, and we've all learned so much more about the game (me inparticular). DMing is definitly a lot of fun, and I think I would say it is my favorite. But I would love to get a chance to try my hand at a PC again. I think it would also be nice to get to play with some experianced DnDers to see if I think my campaign is actually any good.
Go ahead, throw the stone. Now watch it disappear.
