A friend of mine that I play DND with said that monsters should not die untill they reach -10 hit points. Does anyone know if thats true or does anyone play by that as a house rule? To my understanding their is no way for a monster to come back to life because nothing is helping them and -10 hitpoints if for players as an advantage.

AFAIK its zero for monsters except for wild boars who keep fighting to -10 and that would apply to beserker NPC's as well.

Darius is right.

I'd say more, but he said it all.

Unless the DM is a member of the RBDMA. But that's a different issue. =-)

It can be modified as a house rule, but it's senseless as much as it is useless.

Why would a stupid NPC, or especially a stupid animal endure until -10?

I totally agree with Darius too.

I'll have to agree with Darius as well.

Now if it's a human (or possibly a goblin) npc and somebody is there to give him/her some help, well, that'd be up to dm and what plans he/she may have. hehe.

Also, if the pcs wanted to give'em a potion to get thier HP back up to one or so, so they could interigate the npc, I would probably rule that it could be done, as long as the hit that knocked it down didn't do enough damage to have taken below -10.

Generally I'm for the concept of death at -10 for everyone. That makes the process fair. Monsters in our campaign have the same chances of critical hits & misses against the PCs as the PCs have against them, why not -10 death and the possibility of stabilization?

Would make for a great story, having someone you left for dead stabilize and recover, gathering an army to come after you...

The Lady has spoken. So this leaves us nothing to add now, eh? :)

I think that could really be a good story to tell...

Now I think it should be available for intelligent creatures like humanoids...

I've always played with the 0 Unconscious, -10 Death rule for all creatures. You'd be surprised how often the PCs will knock out their foes, loot them, and leave, only to have that one hidden mother-hen type come and revive all her injured little children. It makes getting out of a dungeon just as difficult as getting in. And that's when the PCs start to learn, and start to get a little sadistic or possibly just artistic. They don't just give the deaders a coup-de-gras, they chop up their bodies and make interesting designs out of the remains.

Those PCs sound like my little sister... Vicious creatures. Usually, after my group knock down a creature, we inflict a wound that ensure the creatures death (like a slit throught, or an arrow through the neck)

It's a light bit of humour to break up an otherwise very serious campaign. I'll probaby put an end to it right after they finish their tower of 1000 skulls (one of the player's is an artist and is working on drawing up a pic of it. It should be really cool.)

Ya know, that is just plain sick. Does your group use the Book of Vile Darkness as a source? It really does sound like it.

Besides, if you want to break the monotony of a campaign, you fling spayed, toasted critters from your catapult into the temple gardens.

I had a elf fighter/mage once that killed some ogres , boiled the flesh off the heads and carved some elvish script into the skulls(mainly things like "Keep Out" and Ogres not welcome") and then cast continual light into the script so you had glowing text on the skulls and then staked them out around the village he was helping.funnily enough the ogre attacks they were suffering stopped :D

Yup. But we much prefer EVIL by AEG. As for the fried critters... I don't know but I think they're working on that. The wizard just got himself good old fireball...

Now, even though the characters are still good (just a little twisted), by the remains of their actions (the dismembered bodies, the towers of skulls, bathtubs filled with blood, etc) it has been decided that to a common passerby they 'appear' evil. Pretty soon, they'll have to talk down attacking groups of good adventurers.
