A setup to my question:

A character, who has the ability to base attack more than once (+6/+1) in a turn, requires a full-round action. A character, with Two Weapon Fighting, also requires a full-round action to attack with both weapons, except without worrying about the number of base attacks (except for purposes of rolling to hit).

My question becomes this:
If your character uses Two Weapon Fighting and you can base attack more than once in a round (+6/+1 or +11/+6/+1), how many attacks can you take?

My thought is that you don't get twice as many, but I am not sure. I thought the PHB 3.0 stated one extra attack at the highest bonus. I have not found a thorough explanation in PHB 3.5.

Any suggestions or house rules?

You need Improved TWF to make a second off hand attack (available at BAB 9 in 3.0, at BAB 6 in 3.5). 3.5 s MUCH more appealing for two-weaponed fighters!

Wow, my first post. Hope this helped.

3.5 maintains the same system. You may make one extra attack with your off-hand weapon at your highest base attack bonus, minus any penalties you incur.

So, a possible character at sixth level has:

+6 / +1 base attack
w/ TWF Feat and ITWF Feat (other "To Hit" bonuses might apply)

First, primary attack at +4 (regular base attack)
Second, offhand attack at +4 (regular base attack with TWF)
Third, primary attack at -1 (regular base attack at 6th level)
Fourth, offhand attack at -1 (regular base attack at 6th level with TWF)
Fifth, offhand attack -6 (regular base attack with TWF, -5 with ITWF)

Other factors will change the bonus, accordingly, but factoring just the pure base attack and bonus from TWF/ITWF.

So, at 6th level, is a character capable of FIVE attacks in one Full-Round Attack Action?

Close... it is a total of 4 attacks at this rate. You would get your two regular attacks for your level, one regular off-hand attack (modified by two weapon fighting), and one more off-hand attack due to improved two weapon fighting.

If I am reading your 5 attack example correctly, I think you are trying to take an off-hand attack for each of your regular attacks, and then another for improved. Two weapon fighting states you get one extra attack PER ROUND, not per regular attack.

Also, note that two weapon fighting doesn't give you the ability to make an off-hand attack, it merely makes it easier to do. Every character is entitled to attempt an off-hand attack; it is just difficult to manage without the feats. Improved two weapon fighting grants you the extra attack that is not possible without the feats.

BrotherMouran,

Thank you for pointing out the ROUND versus Attack. That is what I misinterpreted. Is the bonus off hand attack at the highest attack bonus?

Since you've been playing since '79 (I started in the early 80's), do you remember X1 - The Isle of Dread? What a classic!

Sincerely,
