I've gotta tell all of you about this amazing program that I stumbled uppon while searching on Google. It's called "DM Screen" it is alot different than DM Genie, better, less complicated and it's free!!!!! :D

You create the monsters, the encounters, etc... but this program keeps track of them for you, it has tabs which can link you to your favourite treasure generators and two other Misc generators. It includes an NPC generator and an NPC encounter generator, dice roller and here is the icing on the proverbial cake, it has excerpts from the DMG, PH, and MM all under easy to access buttons like "Grenadelike Weapons" or "Hardness DC".

But don't take my word for it! Try it out!

P.S: NO, DON'T work for them  .The program is just to awsome to be left unsung  !

Yep, I've seen DM Screen before. I believe it's indexed in the files for download section of DnDResources. Have you had any contact with the author? I believe that there will be no future updates/fixes to the program.

Each person has their own preference in what in-game/out of game tools they are comfortable with, I always suggest trying all of them that are available before settling down on one. I'm glad you've found one that suits your needs.

Yeah, I use that when I'm running my sessions.

Currentlt I've had no contact -w- the author Lady of Dragons, but I'll chech their site for some updates soon. As for trying our other things, (i.e. DM Genie), which everyone swears by around here it seems, I've tried other programs and this one works for me. I find DM Genie too complicated and hard to be creative with. (plus I'm cheap, I won't pay for anything that I can get for free)

But I agree everyone is entitled their own preference and I was just making sure that everyone was well informed of all of the software out there.

Well, I downloaded it and I'll probably give it a try sometime soon. Whether or not it works out, thanks for pointing it out.

Is it just me but does anyone else feel that a bunch of note books, a pile of dice, and a stack of books better than any program. I just like to be more "hands on" with my campaigns. I only type up stuff I need to keep around for a while, like hand outs and NPC sheets.

I guess I am just old fashioned. I prefer paper to pixels.

Not me, but as a software developer, I'm extremely biased

Note books, dice, stacks of books.... Yup, that sounds exactly like what I use to run my stuff. And after a good session, I just take a shovel and open my closet and then try to clear the floor. No, seriously, it's true. I've a notebook for EVERY PC and NPC of even the remotest of importance. I only use a computer for making maps, but then I print them out, tape the sheets together, and roll it like a real map. I think a few are even laminated. :D

I fall in to Rintaran and Doomdreamers camp on this one. I like extensive paper notes. I am an anachronist it is true. I am also a serious bibliophile and former liberarian. I want to be surounded by books and paper. Not that I mind at all a little program such as a dice roller for when I am using a word processor to make up characters or files about location but I will aways print it off and put it in a binder when I am done.

I have tried using a laptop for game notes but it never works out for me long.

Any way it helps to justify my stationary collection if I actually use it.

Aah, the scent of pen and paper... It sure has a unique taste.

But I'm too lazy for all that.

there is nothing better than ye old tablets and scribes, I hate to have to get up and check a machine for information that is readily handy from a book on my side. And it's always great to see someone spill their drink on their character sheet :) which I've done more than once

Im Caught between the 2 camps I started playing DND with the white books through AD&D up to second addtion. (which I did not like) I have been playing other RPG's but resently my group has been begging for me to run a true D&D campain. with a present of the 3 basic 3.5 books i have start a new campain mixing paper and penicls (never Pen  ) computer material when availible. As a computer Trainer for amajor Corp. I like to use computers in work and play, though I would never think of replacing my Dice with with a program. i always 2 or 3 sets on me

A combination of modern and old seems to be working best for our group. We use pen and paper for our characters, but for pure reference material when I DM, I prefer to have reference material readily available. I have seen, somewhere, a program where you with one click could access weapon stats, modifiers, etc.... the things that during a combat take an unnecessary time to look up.

A really good online reference program, that's what we all need :)

Also, a good sound effects program can really keep them on their toes.... or even a good stack of the right mp3:s during a session, switching from soft blackmore's night to soem theme music from sleepy hollow as they enter the dark catacombs... :)

THANK YOU! That was the program I was looking for!

Gratefully in your debt.
