Catch them out in the open, use lots of missile fire, and the following spells:

Fireball, Wall of Fire, Flame Arrow, Flame Strike, Melf's Acid Arrow, Melf's Minute Meteors, Acid Storm...

I think you get the idea.

I used to play 1st edition, but my DM decided 3.5 was better. I'm not sure i agree, but whats a girl to do?

I can't answer that question, but go to DF (dragonsfoot) and ask that there on the general forums and i'm sure you'll get a concise history lesson on d&d.

I have played D&D since 1982 with pencil and paper have had many many pc's have DMed for about 6 years but still like to play the player char. I love this game. but now i want to play online.

dragonsfoot.org is a really big 1st edition site.

adndcampaigns.com is mostly ad&d 2nd edition, but is doing modules for both 1st and 2nd.

We play both 1st and 2nd Ed. it all depends on the mood. Just like when we feel like playing Paranoia or Call of Cthulu.

I very much prefer 3.5 because my DM is a butt-kicker, and without feats, skills, etc., one first level fighter with chainmail, longsword and shield is the same as another. I just don't have all the books.
