I like that idea with the helmets. Though I see where the extra AC against criticals is coming from, criticals can be scored from an attack on any other area that is particularly vunerable. A stab into the gut, for example.

I think it's usually assumed that a helmet is part of the armor, seeing as it isn't typically offered alone and most of the armour descriptions read something like "suit comes with helmet and greaves."
