Travel Time Want a more realistic approach to travelling?

I figured this would probably be the best place for this. It's by no means a monumental work, but I was trying to figure out how long it would take my players to get from place to place in my world, and got sick of redoing the calculations every five minutes. I made up this handy little table that takes into account speeds from 15-200 (at intervals of 10 starting at 20) and travel times of 7-11 hours per day, depending on how much your characters want to rush it. Like I said, it's nothing major, but it'll save me (and hopefully other people) quite a bit of time in the long run.

I'm attaching a Zipped Excel spreadsheet, but here it is in plain text format as well (copy into Notepad, and it should look ok):

Nice, nice. Just as a thought, could you throw in a MPH column, too? I'm kinda curious what my player's 60 mph wind walk works out to in rounds.

I gotta jet to work, but to give you an idea of how slow dnd players actually move, a human running (120 ft/rd) is not even hitting 15 mph. Humans who are in shape should easily accomplish this adn even get as high as 20 mph. Olympic sprinters are up at about 30 mph in a sprint.
This technique of RPG playing has been passed down the Bloodmooon line for generations!

Raven, people don't run/sprint for hours on end. And you can probably assume that the fast-type people would have the Dash feat, putting them to 35 speed (or ~15, 16 MPH at a run) ;)

Dthclaw, DnD characters cannot sprint for hours on end, either. Run = base speed x 4. For a human, that means they run 120 ft. per round.

120 ft/rd = 12,000 ft./min = 72,000 ft./hr.

72,000 / 5,280 = 13.63636 miles / hour

I set a tredmil at about that speed in college and didn't get off it for half an hour. A sprint is a good 20 mph (175 ft./rd) and an olympic sprinter runs about 30 mph in a sprint (265 ft./rd). A human with Dash can run an incredible 150 ft./rd. That's just sad.

4th edition?! But i just got caught up on 3.5 :P Oh well. Either way, the travel times is a great help, I think. Sure cuts down on the mental math.

This is definately handy!

If possible, for better reference, would you be able to add other methods of transportation?

Horse, horse and cart, horse and carriage, and also various boats and ships?

For extra kinds of transportation just use their base land speed (should be in the item/creature's statistic block) and check it on the chart. For example, if your horse had a base land speed of 60 then you'd just check it on the above chart.

Agreed. I tried to make it as universal as possible so that people wouldn't have to worry about looking up a specific mode of transportation. They just check the base speed and they're off.

I love the miles per hour. Apparently a quetip in a Lincoln (old person with a puff of white hair on top, usually from New York) travels 80 ft./ rd......on the Turnpike. :angryfire:
