Your all missing the most powerful 1st level spell in the game. Hell it is one of the most powerful spells in the game. So you got the 8th level town guard running around in his plate mail+1. Your little first level mage comes out casts the opposite of enlarge on his helmet. It shrinks 10% crushing his skull. Hes dead you win... Unless his helmet saves.
Mount is also nice, you make a mount then before the duration is up you sell it to a dim witted pc or npc.
If you need more ways on making your mage nasty go ahead and email me at dslick916@hotmail.com If you have some good ways to make non nasty spells nasty you let me know I am allways looking for a new "trick"

You actually can't damage someone with shrink object. Silly enebriated primates

Some people are like Slinkies. They're really good for nothing. But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Me: Great, so now I have Satan in my computer. Like XP wasn't problematic enough.

That's what takes a little thinking on your DM's part. Helmets are a tight fit around your head. So if you shrink metal around it and it crushes your head you die. There is no damage table for it because like I said it takes smarts from your DM. Just like you don't take damage for teleporting into solid rock, but your dead none the less. You don't take damage when a cleric cast slay living, but your still dead. Shrink might not say it deals damage but there isnt damage your heads gone.

It is creative, I'm not denying that. But the reason against things like this is to preserve game balance, not stifle creativity. After all, if a 1st level mage can kill people with what is essentially a non-combat spell, there's a problem.

True, it may be unbalanced for some. In our game we play in kinda like newyork city from gangs of new york. Just way worse. I have been playing for over a year now almost 2 I supose. And our characters are low level(we prefer low level games) So when a mage casts shrink on something to kill it it dosn't really matter. Not to mention armor is hard to get in the ghetto so nobody has close fit armor any ways. Took me 4 months of our time to get chain mail. So I can see why it would be unblanced for some games.
anyways seams your the only live one on this forum. do you have an email I can talk to you directly?
just email me at dslick916@hotmail.com

Additionally, most of us won't reply to this topic because we're 3E, and this is a 2E section. On Shrinking someone's helmet while it's on their head, I would have the helmet move upward as it shrunk, having it forced in that direction.
Of course, shrink has other functions that would work well too. Shrink a few planks on a bridge, the rope holding up a chandeleer, etc. These could still have death effects, but grant a reflex save... or whatever the equivalent would be in 1st or 2nd edition.

That would be a dexterity check. Roll a d20, if the result is lower than your dex score, you win. If not, you loose. The saves in 2E were directly related to how well your resist effects on your body, kinda like fort saves/Will saves. THere really wasnt an equivilant to a reflex save. So sorry for all you youngin's to miss out on all the fun.

As to the whole shrink object thing, there are reasons for not having a death spell at first level. It is a horrible idea, not even from a game balance standpoint. To take on the mantle of Axel's "Internal Consistancy" standpoint: at somepoint, the gaurds will start to realize that wearing a helmet lacks benifit and will not do so. And ESPECIALLY since there are no rules that pertain to wearing helmets, any DM worth his salt would simply say that all the gaurds do not wear helmets.
And if you perfer low-level games, than there is really no buisness allowing a mage to cast an effective "powerword: Death" spell, seeing as to how the average helmet would not make that save, and, by your reasoning, it is instant death. If you're going to do that, than why not just play high level? It'd be more fun, cause then you actually have a chance against that spell.
~~~~~~~
On a whole other side note, you seem to be rather eager to get email addresses. I admit, I am curious as to why.
~~~~~~~
3rd side note, while spells in 3.X (.0 or .5) usually lack duration, (Example: summon monster Y: 1 round/level, 2E: summon elemental: 1/hour level), 3.X's spells are easier to cast: (example, resoration cast by a 2E cleric has a casting time of hours, and it ages the caster by a year)

I'm prepared to passionately argue this point until nothing makes sense anymore!- RM
