I was putting together a 1st level Wizard last night and I'm having a problem understanding how to calculate the number of skill points for a character. The equation for wizards on P56 is (2+int modifier) x 4. That would give you 16 points for the average wizard with an int modifier of 2. Yet with an int modifier of 2 in the elf starting package you would have 36 skill points. It dosen't add up. Can someone help me with this? :(

are you adding up all the skills that they gave the elf int hat example example? because in those examples they are just showing you all the possible skills not actualy spreading around the correct number of skillpoints. Its stupid i know, but thats what they do.

Your calculation is correct. at lvl 1 for a wizzie its (2+int)x4

or 16 for an elf mage with int 14-15

20 for a human mage with int 14-15 (2+2+1(for being human))x4

Afraid so. Personally, I hate math. I'm top in my class and whizz through the work in a couple of minutes, but I absolutely LOATHE IT, so I prefer to use Microsoft Excel to calculate everything for me

I too was a whizz, but that is irrelavent.

What I do nowdays, is get a cheapo little charactor generator (or use my Neverwinter Nights) to do that early bit of charactor for me, so I don't have to do the math on stats or skills, then I copy my charactor to some paper and play normaly from there.

Erm, yeah, sorry.

I never understood why they did the packages the way they did, as it only makes the kind of confusion suffered by Coffee more prevalant. It is only to serve the gods of chaos to do stupid stupid brownie-munching poop like that without clarifying what the heck they're doing.

Their is something else- how do you calculate the Spell Save DC Modifier for a character? The blank is on the character sheets but I can't find the info in the Player's Handbook (the info on calcating the DC for your spell is there but not the save modifier for characters).

Generally its:

10 + Spell level + Appropriate ability modifier (Intelligence for wizards, Charisma for bards, etc.)

Or you could be talking about the actual saving throw number which is:

Base save number (shown in the description of the class) + Key ability modifier for the save (Con for Fort, Wis for Will, Dex for Ref) + Any misc modifiers (usually in the form of magic but can also be racial)

+1 if you have spell focus in that particular spell's school
and +1 again for greater spell focus

SR is pretty easy, actually.

Against a creature that has SR, in order to affect it with a spell that can be negated via spell resistance, a caster must roll:

1d20 + Effective Caster Level (usually caster class level + feats + special bonuses from PrCs)

The result must equal or exceed the target's spell resistance in order to affect it. If the result is lower than the target's SR, the spell simply doesn't affect them (yes, even area-effect spells can be negated thusly - a rakshasa can take a nap in the center of a continuous barrage of fireballs and wake up unscathed).
