Okay, okay... Now please can anyone tell me... How is the half-orc base race even remotely equivalent to any of the other races in balancing? Has any of you thought about it?

I'ts a little on the low side...they get +2 strength in exchange for -2 int and char, and also illiteracy unless they spend 2 skill points. I think they made the race a little underpowered to keep everyone from choosing it for strength...and to keep humans usefull.

That is true, in total their ability modifiers come to -2 unlike any other standard race (Who all come to 0). Abnormal abilities aside, they are in actuality weaker than the other races

I agree.

This is one of the reasons I have never played a half-orc (although I have had fiends that have)

The Frogotten Realms version of the wood elf is the same way.

Half-orcs did not receive illiteracy in 3.0 or 3.5. Literacy is based on career choice (class) and (possbly) background. Don't confuse the race with thier favored class, barbarian.

It's true that their overall ability score adjustments is -2, but consider what scores those changes are going into. Half-Orcs are meant for players that want to play something a little barbaric. -1 skill pt and -1 to Cha checks/skills means pretty much nothing to most Half-Orcs, while that extra +1 attack, damage does.

Also consider that puts them closer to the godly 18 Strength with a +4 modifier and a +6 damage with a 2-handed weapon, and still they could start with a mighty 20! being capable of an earth-shaking 22 strenght at level 8! for a +9 damage alone!, without considering they could be taking classes in barbarian and all the magic equipment out there :P

If you want a high Strength score, then just go with Stone Giant. They get a +16 to Strength, plus the normal maximum of 18 makes a grand total of 34 and a +12 bonus at 1st Level!

Perhaps the fact that Balors aren't playable creatures? Whilst Hill Giants and Stone Giants are?

Btw.. Stone Giant only has Level adjustment of +5... yet they start with FOURTEEN levels of giant. Have FIVE starting feats... etc... Str +16 Con +8 Dex +2 and some others... they really just.. own. But Cloud Giants are playable characters, they just don't list LA/stats/etc for them..

Honestly, I think any of the phb races are severely crippled compared to ones in the MM.

Off Topic Question: Would my post be considered off topic for the thread, Blackthorne?

I personally would change that to just a plain +2 str -2 cha, if the race's history was just.
I like the version of the orc race using in the Morrowind game. They're not just senseless barbarian, they're a well respected race famed for their military techniques and their fine armor crafting. They're stronger than the comon races and don't look as good but there's no reason for them to be any stupider

But Orcs in DND -are- stupid. So they sort of get it from their blood I guess. But yeah, I like Morrowind's way better too. That's why God invented House Rules!
