I'm looking to download a mapping program.. I don't mind paying a decent amount, but I basically need something nice for combat maps, and dungeon maps. Anyone have any suggestions, comments, tips?

The Dundjinni seems quite an eyecandy, altho as Milady has said in another topic, the massive ink consumption can be a problem.

The Dungeon Crafter on the other hand, seems great to me, it's simple and you can add tiles by simply importing bitmaps. The bad thing is you cannot create a "custom tile" button set and you have to select the bitmap files from the little directory tree you see there. But I still like it, it's fair, cheap and simple.

I am using Dungeon Crafter currently! :D

Ink isn't really a problem, though file size is. Most of my players play online with me, so it's just a file transfer.. some of them are on 56k, however.

Any chance you know where I can get some in-depth Forgotten Realms maps? Particularly of the Sword Coast area. Only thing I have close is the stuff in Salvatore's books.

Just checked out Dundjinni.. Never going to buy it. Ever. They charge you for extra art, so if you get "everything" it's around 100+ bucks. Outrageous. Highway robbery! By ORCS! -mutters-

There's the Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas, it was made a few years ago by the folks who made CC2. It includes like 500 very in-depth maps of FR. Unfortunately it's out of print, but you might be able to catch a copy on ebay or somewhere.

Details are available at http://www.profantas...fratlas/faq.htm, but again, it's out of print. :|

I recommend Coreldraw v9 suite (should be some at amazon for less than $100 as it's now up to v12 - don't get v10, too buggy), IF, and only if, your willing to draw everything from scratch (this also applies to Illustrator and Deneba's canvas), there are no premade tiles but it can import about every file type (except CC2) so all those free Dundjinni things (png) can be used. It also can be used for almost every other 2d project you would wind up doing, letters, page layout, etc.

Well, that's my basic rant for Coreldraw, if you haven't seen some of what it can do, please stop by:

oh, and NRC from http://www.kelestia.com/ (harn) uses v12, he's done some very nice landscape/overland maps on his atlas page. He was using v8 until he met yours truly...

My friends and I use a program called Fractal mapper. With a little practice you can do anything with it. Import symbols from other sources. One of my friends can even draw characters with it, but he's put in over two hundred hours on the thing by my guess. I wish I had that kind of time. I think it was about $30 or so.

I find that scrolling on Autorealm can be very jerky and unreliable. Apart from that it's just a case of getting used to it

You're right about that, but it's still the best I could find. I think it's even better than fractal mapper.

I stick to three things: AutoRealm, Dungeon Crafter, and Pen and Paper. (the latter note being software) AutoRealm i sreally involved and hard to make areas colored and filled in. Dungeon Crafter is really structured. So I still go with Pen and Paper over both.

I've got Dungeon Crafter, and I consider it to be very god. The only slight thing that annoys me sometimes is the lack of tiles, but I think that loads more are available for free download on the website.
