I'm having a hard time understanding how AC works in Ad&d, can someone elaborate. (Ive only played 4e and am just starting 1e).And how would i determine what it takes to hit someone, And what would i call the number needed to hit, like your "to hit" or your "defense" what would i call it? (P.S I have all of the books)
Thanks

There's a chart in the DMG for each class. AC is still AC, though it runs the opposite direction from 3e and 4e: Lower AC numbers make you harder to hit.

Dungeon Master Guide & Dungeon Master Screen have the basic tables.
2nd Ed and UA brought in THACO - To Hit Armor Class Zero as the new system but
the original started with 10 to -10.
AC 10 was naked or clothing...beating up a commoner NPC in a starting town
AC -10 was gawdly and something you wouldn't see unless you were quite a few years
into the campaign or if you remember the old gold box "Immortal Rules" from basic D&D.
1st Ed. AC goes down from 10 in increments depending on the armor be it leather, splintmail/chain,
scale, plate, etc. A shield regardless of size at that time took AC down by 1 point as well.
Dexterity was just starting to play in at that time as well but nothing like the changes via mod
in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions.
Hope that helps ya.
