Point: Preperation.

Though simple, it's an important point to make. Have a book with you at work or school, and make notes, develop backstory for NPCs, and if you have a math book, grid out some maps.

Idea: Reversed roles.

Simple again, but not often seen coming. Who could guess that a Grick had a Gnoll as a pet and was using him for it's own little plans? Good kind of stuff if you want to show some really strange stuff going down in the world, but you may have some problems getting the point across.

Plot: No twist is good twist.

If you have too many plot twists, make it black and white, and catch them off guard.

E.g: The party is hunting a werebear. A paladin assists them. A obvious plot twist is that although the alchemist in the strange castle is the top suspect, it is indeed the paladin, and the alchemist assists in taking him down. The party can see this from a mile away, usually anyhow. This means that they could be very suspect of said paladin, and then notice one night, while watching paladin, he dies.
