I, Nagmar son of Kerrek, set down these words so all may know of my great deeds.
After teaching me runes, Grandmother Farmer suggested that I keep a journal. Seem like a strange endeavor but I respect her and I will do my best. A week ago I was helping Grandfather Farmer in the field with the druid and the skald; they are both Sons of the Forest, when we were beset by foul magic. It rendered all of us powerless. I awoke to find my self tied up like a hog. Every time I tried to break free or refused to eat, they beat me with sticks until I stopped moving. Warriors should not be treated as such. This was a mistake that I swore that their chieftain would pay for.
Several days later, we were released by a warrior woman calling her self Opal. She told me that, her companions had defeated the ones who captured me and were questioning one of them in the barn. I carried a cask of ale from the hut we were in, to the barn. As I entered their prisoner started screaming. They had him in some sort of device with oxen attached to him. He was not a warrior so I did not care.
I was introduced to her companions, along with the others. They are Jarin, a warrior, Mordryth, a boy with a raven, and Cham, a boy with a rat. The boy with the rat tried to intimidate me, I found him amusing and harmless. The one with the raven seems cagey. He released the prisoner but took part of his finger. Strange, I would have killed him better to kill a potential ally then to let a foe escape.
After that they started to blather on about this and that. I took a nap.
They woke me and we went to town. I retrieved my things from grandmother and grandfather and went to the inn. Looks like Jarin enjoys his ale. Spent the night talking to a hunter that I let win in arm wrestling. It got late and I went to bed.
Later the druid woke me up. I said that there was a scream and that there was “A bear, I think.” What kind of druid, or Son of the Forest, can’t tell a bear from a monster spawned b y magic, I think he is a fool. I put on my armour and went down stairs. I opened the door to see a horrible monster part bird and part bear. I yelled for assistance, drew strength from the gods and attacked. The boy with the raven shot fire from his hand at the beast, almost hitting me. The boy with the rat shot light at the thing. Opal and another warrior, named Kern, joined in fight as did that fool of a druid. Just as the beast was slain, the boy with the rat, charged at it. For not being an adult he is quite brave.
After I marked the beast with my sign, it will serve me well in the after life, Then Opal, Kern, the fool and I went and drank ale together. Then back to sleep.
The next day the entire village greeted us as the heroes that we are. We drank and sang and enjoyed the ladies. The boy with the rat explained to me he didn’t have a father and never had the rite of adulthood. I offered to take him as my son. He declined, but said he wanted me to teach him how to be strong. I agreed.
Around noon or so, we left to track the ‘Owl-bear’ as the boy with the raven called it. (He seems to get annoyed by being called boy.) We reached its nest and were rewarded with gold but didn’t find a reason why it attacked the town, strange.
