It's two days later and we're finally out of the city... finally. What could have been accomplished in a day has somehow taken three. I did manage to get a few things accomplished; I now know that there is something special about the chain shirt I obtained from the owlbear's lair (it's magical!), I learned that Nagmar is in the process of giving both Mordreth and the boy some training... and I discovered that I have been right in my thinking that it would be a whole lot of fun to lay a beating on the boy!

Nagmar has all of us head out of the city to give the two spell weavers some instruction. He gave them some basic padded armor and wooden practice weapons and had them demonstrate how they thought they should be using a weapon. Seeing the results, we've decided to steer Cham towards a long sword or something similar; Mordreth seems more comfortable with a two-handed approach so we recommended either a battle axe or a hand-and-a-half.

Next Nagmar wanted to see how they would handle a live opponent. He had Cham take one of the practice weapons and looked for a volunteer; I jumped at the opportunity to teach the boy a lesson and grabbed the other waister. Apart from one cheap shot he threw before we actually got started, his inexperience really showed through. While he has good reflexes he still has a way to go in becoming competent. The main thing he needs to learn is that he doesn't have to swing with all his might. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to take a couple of good swings at him.

Things got a little more testy after that. It was Mordreth's turn but for some reason Jarin seemed to be in a foul mood and challenged Nagmar to show him what he knew. I'm not sure what got in to him but he seemed to be taking this very seriously. While I laid a decent beating on Cham I wasn't trying to kill him... I wasn't so sure with these two. Nagmar ended up breaking one of the waisters over Jarin's head. That ended that but whatever the problem between the two of them is I don't think it's over. We went back to town and wasted the rest of the day.

Finally we set out this morning to head back to the Crying Wood to investigate the ruins of the old magic school. While the city of Mournhold certainly isn't as intimidating as it was just a few days ago, it's a place I'm glad to be away from. While I doubt there's much chance of anyone being able to link me to the tax collectors, the fact that they're actively investigating it makes me happy to be away. We've reached the library without much trouble and I think we're going to start looking into finding a way inside soon.
