I haven't written much lately but seem to have ample time now. Quite a bit has happened in the last week. We've made our way down to the city of Seraport; while the city is large and impressive it was nothing compared to my first look at the sea. It's almost incomprehensible that there can be that much water and it just goes on as far as you can see. We made our first stop as the harbor; Opal, knowing her way around ships, thinks that there are only a handful of ships currently here that would be able to make the trip out to where the Claws want to take the box. While she and Mordryth went to check out some of the boats more closely, I wandered along the docks. At the far end I encountered an older man, close to my father's age, fishing the waters. There was quite a collection of junk next to him, apparently the fruits of some of his labors. I spoke (and fished) him for a while. In the course of our conversation I asked him about the people we're looking for - he hasn't seen anyone like that and is apparently out here a lot (he's a semi-retired blacksmith with a nearby shop) so it doesn't seem that they've looked into one of the ships.
Opal and Mordryth obtained the services of a ship in case we need to leave. It seems that we may have made it here ahead of the Claws.
Back at the inn we met a dwarf, Balderac by name. He apparently works for the gnome who sent us down here and has been covertly following our quarry. Not only have we beaten them here we now know where they are coming. Most of us think it is a good idea to see about intercepting them... all except Mordryth. He seems to think it would be a better idea to let them leave and catch up with them. He may be intelligent when it comes to magic but he doesn't know much about strategy. If we stop them now then fine; if we don't, we'll have another chance to deal with them at sea or at the Ring Islands.
Our plan worked to a point but we didn't manage to stop them. After riding out from the city we set up an ambush along their route. Somehow they sniffed out the ambush and started riding around where we were. We intercepted a mixed group, humans, elves, a dwarf and a halfling. I didn't think about it until afterwards that something was wrong, though... the tattooed elf we're looking for wasn't with this group. We eliminated them but found out that we hadn't won as a fiery explosion ripped through our camp. There must have been some invisible or concealed members of the group and they have access to some destructive magic. All of our horses except one were dead and pretty much anything that wasn't hard metal was burned. Balderac, who had stayed at the camp was very badly injured. Mordryth seemed to think the dwarf was responsible - Opal stepped in, though, taking one of the horses of the group we killed and riding back to Seraport to get the burned dwarf to a healer (Bran had used all his spells for the day, apparently). Cham was bemoaning the fact that his pet rat, Rizzo, was also burned. Losing the rat would be a bigger loss than losing Cham. The rest of us gathered up what little could be salvaged and started walking back.
